In fact, while it looks silver and is commonly referred to as "mercury glass," neither mercury nor silver was ever used in the original formula. Real silvered mercury glass describes glass that was blown double-walled, then silvered between the layers with a solution containing silver nitrate in a liquid form and sealed. After it first appeared at the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition in London, mercury glass became the latest rage in collectible art glass and continued to be produced in its original form for 80 years.
